The HiiiPower of Black Hippy (TDE)

black-hippy1

There’s no doubt that the TDE roster is packed with amazing talent. SZA and Isaiah Rashad are tough acts with dope music, period, point blank! But, when it comes down to it, it’s all about Black Hippy! Yes, Kendrick is a manimal (man & animal, duh) and more than likely, he’s the leading vote recipient, but it’s really not that easy. They all bring a different element to the group that demands respect. And, when they join fores on one track, their differences and unique abilities really stand out.

Ever heard of a lyrical gangster? Meet Jay Rock! He’s aggressive on tracks with a style that embodies the Watts’ gang culture he grew up and around. He attacks beats with the ferocity of a gang initiation. Ab-Soul, the black lip bastard, is laid back but witty and lyrical with his rhymes. He comes across as a third-eye, conscious emcee but the man is nasty with his wordplay! It’s something like a crime scene when he hits tracks! Listening to a partying, gang banging, drug selling and abuser named Schoolboy Q is like visiting Las Vegas for a three-day run. The man can spit, though! How do you like it? Fast or slow? His delivery and well known ad-lib, ‘Yawk,’ injects so much energy into my body, you can’t help but get up and move. Kendrick Lamar is, well, he is pretty much all of them wrapped into one. He can jump from conscious to gangster to party to political. (Dammit, I was supposed to make an argument for the others but somehow, I can’t deny Kendrick’s talent and ability.) I appreciate what they all bring to the table but it’s something about his ability to be versatile that gets him the nod. With that said, check the lineup below and listen to some of their music to develop your own opinion!

Jay Rock

What’s brackin’? Jay Rock has been called ‘lazy’ because he doesn’t push himself or his music like he should. Here, it’s obvious that he doesn’t have as many albums as his crew and it’s unfortunate. ROCK, don’t take your talent for granted and bless our ears with more!!

Ab-Soul

Ah yes, the workaholic of TDE. I’m sure a lot of you didn’t know that Ab-Soul has dropped a total of five albums and mixtapes under the TDE umbrella. In my opinion, all of them are worthy of multiple listens with ‘Control System’ being the most complete of the lot.

Schoolboy Q

Pop a molly? Nah, not your thing? Didn’t think so! Quincy aka ‘Q’ has produced three dope ass albums, ‘cuz. Hands down, though, the most complete studio album from this man is ‘Habitats & Contradictions’ but the others, hold their own, EASILY!

Kendrick Lamar

Well, well, well, if it isn’t King Kendrick! You know, this man reminds me of Outkast (the greatest group of all time), in the way he can switch and jump from style to style without losing quality in his content. Nothing more to say…
