DUPP&SWAT: THE CONCEPT opens at Camp North End this week

August 21, 2017

CHARLOTTE, NC: After a successful grand re-opening of their DUPP&SWAT: PLAZA location last month, siblings Davita and Dion Galloway are unveiling DUPP&SWAT: THE CONCEPT at Camp North End tomorrow, August 22 from 6-8pm. The space will serve as a curated collection of artistic expression with a common theme, which rotates every six months. The space will first be partnering with Urban Ministry Center, revealing their version of a studio apartment while addressing the impact of homelessness. This install will be featured for the next six months, with donations over that duration going to Urban Ministry Center.

The location of THE CONCEPT is 1824 Statesville Ave. Suite 109, and is adjacent to the Boileryard at Camp North End, which is growing in popularity since it started hosting live music, food trucks, and breweries every Friday night. Davita Galloway has recently been getting a lot of press around Charlotte due in part to her riveting talk at CreativeMornings in June of this year. Galloway made waves by calling for the end of the “starving artist” and put forth a call to action, “In order for our art and creative community to survive, artists must survive.”

Urban Ministry Center (UMC) has been a fixture in Charlotte since 1994 providing basic services (soup kitchen, showers, laundry, mail) for our neighbors experiencing homelessness; today they continue to help people on a path out of homelessness with those services, but have also hit on the answer to ending chronic homelessness. The Housing First Charlotte Mecklenburg initiative is a partnership of 28 nonprofits, government offices, churches and corporations managed by Urban Ministry Center. Together they have worked to house over 533 chronically homeless individuals since they began in February 2015. As the initiative wraps up they are asking the community for help in providing 200 Welcome Home Kits to help the remaining chronically homeless individuals find their way to a new home.

For the most up to date information as it becomes available, follow DUPP&SWAT’S Facebook page. Information about how to get more involved can be found at www.duppandswat.com. All donations are tax deductible and visitors are encouraged to donate at the grand opening event.
